The Wanderer 'El Wanderer' Carinyena 2008
The Wanderer does it again, this time in Spanish. The inaugural vintage from Andrew Marks, only 100 cases made.
The inaugural vintage of ‘El Wanderer’ Carinyena 2008 from the Catalunya region in Spain has now arrived. Carinyena, also know as Carignan in France, produces medium bodied, fragrant wines and was historically used as a component in neighbouring Rioja’s red wine blend.
‘El Wanderer’ is a single-vineyard wine from The Emporda, a little known wine region an hour and a half north of Barcelona, more famous for being the home of El Bulli restaurant and the birthplace of Salvador Dali.
The grapes were harvested from vines over 100 years old, a minimalistic approach to winemaking being taken, the wax sealing over the cork being indicative of the level of care Andrew takes in producing his wines.
With only 100 cases of the inaugural vintage being produced it won't be available for long.

Winemaker’s Tasting Note:
The wine has been made according to The Wanderer’s minimalistic handling principles.
The grapes were hand picked early in the morning. They were destemmed not crushed and left to soak cold for a week. Maceration of the fermentation was as soft as possible to preserve the fruit and build texture without the extraction of excessive tannin. At the completion of fermentation the wine was run into one year old French barriques and left on lees for one year until bottling.
El Wanderer is a wine that speaks of the Emporda. It is boldly aromatic yet medium bodied. It has great texture and real character, dark fruits and hints of the sea with wafting rustic notes.
